Converting Your Golf Cart For Off-Roading
When you picture a golf cart, you probably imagine it near the green or on some campus. While golf carts are great in those arenas, did you know they can also take you on off-road adventures?
We here at Revel 42 Golf Carts & Powersports want to help you enjoy your golf cart in your way, so we’ve put together some tips for converting it into an off-roading beast, below. To learn more, or if you’re on the hunt for a golf cart to make your next outing easier, contact our store in Garner, North Carolina, today!
Find Your Cart
Every work of art needs a canvas, so to speak. Your first step is to find the right cart for off-roading. You should focus on aluminum carts rather than steel for corrosion resistance, for example. You’ll also want something with a sizeable ground clearance already.
Check the Motor
Next, verify that the motor has the power you need. Most golf cart engines are low-horsepower and designed for flat, even ground, so you may want to replace it or upgrade it for more torque and speed.
Consider a Lift Kit
Getting a cart with good ground clearance helps, but it may not be quite high enough to get you past the obstacles nature likes to throw at off-roading parties. These kits can increase your cart’s ground clearance by anywhere between 3” and 12” and you’ll want to balance your terrain-clearing needs with your budget. Also verify that your suspension will still give you the support you’ll need.
Tire Replacements
Standard golf cart tires are built for turf and pavement, so you’ll want to change them out for all-terrain tires. These will give you better traction on looser terrains like sand or mud, but if you have one specific terrain in mind, try to find tires built specifically for it. Make sure they’ll fit comfortably in the wheel-wells, as well.
Install a Windshield
Some golf carts come with their own windshield, but many don't. You’ll definitely want the extra protection when off-roading, both from splashing water and mud and from branches and airborne debris. You’ll have to decide between a full windshield and a folding one, which can offer some protection without cutting off airflow entirely on hot days.
Battery Swap
Your golf cart’s battery, like the engine, isn’t designed for the stresses and rigors of off-roading. If you want to go on longer or tougher rides, you’ll want to switch it out for something stronger. You’ll want to balance maximized runtime with durability and life expectancy.
