Golf carts are surprisingly robust and useful little machines, but every machine needs regular maintenance, so you’ll eventually have to decide if you should do the maintenance yourself or get the cart serviced. We here at Revel 42 Golf Carts & Powersports want to help you keep your cart in good shape, so we’ve put together a few questions to ask yourself to determine which option is best for you. To learn more, or to schedule a golf cart service appointment, contact our store in Garner, North Carolina, today!

Is the Process Familiar and Comfortable?

Your first step is to evaluate both the maintenance in question and your own comfort level with the processes involved. Ask yourself, “Do I have the necessary experience and skills to perform this maintenance properly?” Relatively minor or simple repairs and tasks should be fine to perform on your own, but for more complicated maintenance, there’s no shame in admitting you’re not an expert. If you have any doubts at all, play it safe and call a professional.

Are the Right Tools Available?

If you decide you could handle the maintenance without help, it’s time to look around at your toolset. You need to evaluate whether or not you’ve got the right equipment on hand to perform the process safely and correctly. Again, if it’s a fairly simple issue, chances are household tools will be more than enough to get the job done, but specialized tools can be finicky and expensive. And the more high-risk and complex the required repair is, and the more specialized the proper tools become, the less safe it becomes for you to try and tackle it on your own. As we said above, play it safe.

Is There Time in Your Schedule?

Finally, if you have both the expertise and the proper equipment to handle the operation without safety risk or complications, you need to ask yourself one last question—do you have the time? There are plenty of tasks that can be done in under an hour’s time, but longer processes might eat up too much time to do it all at once. Splitting the repair between multiple sessions is often possible, but it includes increased risk that you’ll forget exactly where in the process you are, or even that the issue becomes worse with only partial maintenance.

And of course, if your golf cart’s maintenance takes weeks to perform on your own, you may be spending more time and money on the process than it would take to get the cart serviced. Try to find the balance.
