Just like a car or truck, your beloved scooter could do with a good, thorough washing now and then. You might think washing your scooter isn’t that necessary since it’s just going to get dusty again, but think again. A clean scooter is easier to maintain since you can see problems very clearly without any mud or dirt in the way. Clean scooters are also just nicer to ride on and more attractive, too.

Revel 42 Golf Carts & Powersports, with locations in Wilmington and Raleigh, is your North Carolina scooter dealer. Below, you’ll find a quick guide to washing your scooter so you can get it clean and go back to riding as soon as possible!

1. Gather Up Supplies

Make sure your scooter’s engine is cool before you begin the washing process. You don’t want to blast cold water on a hot engine. Plug the exhaust with a rag so that water doesn’t get in it. Park your scooter in the shade over a spot with good drainage, such as a gravel or concrete driveway. Don’t wash your scooter on the lawn, as the soap can damage your grass and the debris might carry seeds you don’t want growing in your yard.

Get your supplies together so that you don’t have to go hunting for something in the middle of the washing process. You’ll need:

  • A source of clean, fresh water such as a garden hose
  • Buckets
  • Scooter-friendly soap like a motorcycle wash or car wash soap
  • Sponges
  • Hard-bristle brush
  • Chamois cloths
  • Can of compressed air
  • Chain lubricant
  • Polish or wax, if desired

2. Rinse & Scrub Your Scooter

Turn on your hose and spray down your scooter with water to rinse off the top layer of dirt and debris. If you need a degreaser, spray it on your scooter while it’s still dry and let it sit for 15 minutes or so before rinsing it off.

Mix together your soap and clean water in a bucket, dip in a sponge and start washing your scooter from top to bottom. Focus on the really dirty parts, like the headlights and tires. Make sure you rinse as you go so that you aren’t allowing soap scum to build up. Replenish your soapy water as needed if it gets too dirty to do a good job.

If you’ve got dirt in hard-to-reach places, then you’ll want to grab that hard-bristle brush and get to work scrubbing out nooks and crannies.

3. Dry Your Scooter

Now you can dry your scooter off. You can allow it to air-dry if you prefer while you go attend to other things, but this may let unsightly water spots form. If you want a really nice shine, use your chamois cloths to wipe down your scooter carefully. If you need to get into those snug areas, a can of compressed air is useful to blast water out of tight spots.

4. Lubricate & Wax Your Scooter

Now is the time to lubricate any parts that might have gotten wet or lost some of their grease while washing, like chains. Your final step is to take a clean chamois cloth and apply your wax to it, then rub this into the scooter, making sure to avoid getting any on the seat so it doesn’t become slippery. Once you’re done, you can stand back and admire your work!
