Which Is Better Gas or Electric Golf Carts?
One of the most common questions that we get asked is which is better, a gas or electric golf cart? The answer to this question is... there is no right or wrong answer, it is all based on personal preference. I will lay out the differences for you as there are pros and cons to each, but the final decision is ultimately up to you to answer. Lets get into it!
First I will go over the pros of the electric golf carts and some of the cons of the gas golf carts. One of the biggest advantages of electric golf carts is they don't make noise like a gas golf cart does. When you are riding an electric golf cart there is no motor to talk over if you are trying to have a conversation with someone. The gas motor isn't extremely loud but there is clearly noise to talk over. The next thing is the electric golf carts don't vibrate like gas golf cart would. Some people that come in to test drive our golf carts complain about the vibrations from the gas engine. While it's not overwhelming you can definitely feel it when you drive. Some people don't mind it and others absolutely hate it. A big advantage that the electric golf carts have over the gas golf carts is they have instant power. When you push the gas pedal down on an electric cart you immediately start to move. On a gas golf cart when you push the gas pedal down there is a little bit of lag while you wait for the gas engine to start up. As far as maintenance the electric golf cart is by far easier if you are going to be doing the maintenance yourself. The only regular maintenance you have to do is water the batteries and this can be a five minute task if you have a battery watering system (If this isn't something you're familiar with click here to see a demonstration). With a gas golf cart you have to change the oil, oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter.
Next I will go over the pros of the gas golf carts and some of the cons of electric golf carts. Unlike an electric golf cart you can ride a gas golf cart for a very long time and I mean a VERY long time (approximately 250 miles) without it running out of gas. A electric golf cart will go between 20-60 miles depending on the battery set-up in the golf cart and other conditions such as the amount of passengers, terrain, temperature etc. You do not have to worry about buying a new set of batteries every four to six years either. While you will have to pay for gas, you won't have one big purchase every four to six years that costs around $700-$800. When you get home and park your golf cart you don't have to worry about plugging it into a charger either, this is not a big deal but it is something to remember. We have heard people say they forgot to plug their electric cart in and the next day they go to ride it and they can't because it's dead. The last thing I will say about the gas golf cart is it has more continuous power. From the time you start going until the time the governor kicks and limits your speed you have the same amount of power. The electric carts have a lot more power at lower speeds and lose some of their power at higher speeds.
Overall those are the biggest differences between gas and electric golf carts. Ultimately the decision is in your hands as to which one is better.
